As with many a good festive story, the narrative of how Silent Night came into being has been embellished and romanticised over time. In 1817, Mohr transferred to the parish of St. Nicholas in the town of Oberndorf, just south of Salzburg. There, he asked his friend Franz Xaver Gruber, a local schoolteacher and organist, to write On December 24 th, 1818, Father Joseph Mohr walked over to Franz Gruber’s home. He asked the organist to take a Christmas poem the pastor had written two years earlier and set it to music.

Joseph Franz Mohr war ein österreichischer Priester und Dichter, der den Text des bekannten Weihnachtsliedes „Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht“ (1816) zunächst als Gedicht verfasste und Franz Xaver Gruber um die Vertonung bat. Deux ans plus tard, Mohr est convoqué à Oberndorf, où il fait la connaissance de Franz Xaver Gruber. Très vite, en 1819, il continue son chemin vers Kuchl.
